This routine will systematically take you through all possible left-hand fingerings and the three most common string crossings you'll come across in real music.
Instant access. Yours to keep, no subscription.
Eleven fingerings, three ways through the strings, five positions, two starting strokes. It is a lot to hold in your head, and holding it in your head is exactly what stops you paying attention to how you sound.
So the app holds it for you. It runs all 33 exercises as one unbroken pass, in time, with the tab moving under a playhead, and it keeps a record of which positions and which starting strokes you have actually covered.
Metronome, count-in, and tab that follows note by note. Pick your position, your starting stroke and your tempo, press start, and play. It logs the time and shows you the ground you have covered.
Why this is worth doing properly, the eleven fingerings, the three string patterns in tab, how the whole thing links together, and how to structure a session. Print it or keep it on a stand.
Me explaining the routine and how to use it: what each part of it is doing, where to start, and how to cycle the positions and the starting strokes across your week.
If you picked up this routine from me a few years back, you already know the exercises. What is new is the app that runs them for you, the workbook, and the record of what you have actually covered.
These exercises sound like nothing. That is the most useful thing about them.
When you practise a lick you have heard at full speed, you push toward that speed without deciding to. There is nothing to chase here, so you are free to play it as slowly as it takes to play it properly, which is the only thing that makes practice work.
Start at 50 BPM. I do it at 60 to 80. The whole point is getting everything perfect, and that is what gives you technique you can actually use in music.
Relaxed. Feel tension anywhere and you stop, shake it out, and start again.
Accurate. Every note clean. No flams where the fingers are not connecting properly.
Tone. Play with the sound you actually want, even on something this unmusical.
You get a licence key by email. Paste it in once and the app remembers you. Works on up to three devices.
In your browser, nothing to install. Made for a desktop, since you need to read tab while you play.
Kept in your browser, and you can export it as a small file to move between computers or keep as a backup.
This is included in The Practice Room and Practice Room Pro, along with everything else I have made. If you are already in, you do not need to buy it. Open your Practice Lab and it is under Workouts.
If you are not, have a look at what is in there before you decide.
Playing along with something like this is more fun than trying to do the routine on your own, and it is much easier to sit down and get it done. You start, and you get through it.
